Double Check your Fertility Medications Expiration Dates

Double Check your Fertility Medications Expiration Dates

The other day I decided to finally go through all of my fertility medications and throw out used containers. I have a bunch of extra medications from my cycle as I almost over stimulated and used only 1/3 of the Menopur and Follistim prescribed.

I actually only used Menopur for 3 days!

I honestly have enough for about 2 more cycles for myself- and have been lucky enough to only need one retrieval to bring me success so far.

As I was going through the boxes, I noticed that the dates on the prescription label and on the lot are much different! I know that many women donate their medications if they can't use them by the expiration date- and I plan to as well. However, I've seen women donate them even if they need them in a couple of months- because they think that they are expired.

I just wanted to point this out in case it may help others who are in need of their own extra medications.

By no means am I accusing doctors or pharmacies of doing anything wrong- I'm sure that this is just their protocol. Doctors would have no idea of lot expiration on individual packages and must have a protocol to ensure safety.

**Notice that the actual Lot Expiration on the box is almost over a year later on all three of these medications**

Use by date: 12/23/2016

Storage instructions:

ENDOMETRIN may be stored at room temperature and is good until the printed expiration date.

Use by date:10/04/16
Lot expiration: 1/2017
Out of pocket cost: $450-800 out of pocket for 1 box ( 5 vials)

Menopur Storage:

Undissolved MENOPUR, in powder form, should be stored in the refrigerator or at room temperature and is good until the expiration date printed on the vial. The product should be protected from light, so store it in its box, if possible. Once MENOPUR has been dissolved, it should be used immediately and any unused MENOPUR should be safely discarded.

Follistim AQ 900 IU Cartridge

Use by date:10/04/16
Lot expiration: September 2017
Out of pocket cost: $850-$1000+

Follistim AQ Storage:

Store Follistim AQ between 34 and 46 degrees F (2 and 8 degrees C) until the expiration date. It may also be stored at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) for 3 months or until the expiration date, whichever occurs first. Do not freeze. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Follistim AQ out of the reach of children and away from pets.

My hope is that I can help even just one person by double checking their expiration dates and potentially save themselves hundreds of dollars- or even be able to give their medications to someone in need. Infertility is hard enough- we don't need to be wasting any unused medications!
